IELTS Vocabulary for Speaking: Words That Get You Band 7+
At Band 7, examiners expect you to use "less common" vocabulary with "some awareness of style and collocation." This guide gives you exactly what words to learn and how to use them naturally.
The Upgrade Principle
Don't learn random words. Instead, take the basic words you already use and upgrade them:

| bad | detrimental, concerning, problematic | "This could be detrimental to health" |
| very big | substantial, considerable, significant | "A substantial number of people" |
| very important | crucial, essential, paramount | "Education is essential for development" |
| a lot of | a considerable amount of, numerous | "Numerous studies have shown..." |
| get better | improve, enhance, progress | "My skills have improved significantly" |
| think | believe, consider, reckon | "I firmly believe that..." |

Collocations: Sound Natural
Collocations are word combinations that native speakers use together. Using them correctly is a Band 7 marker.
| Wrong | Correct Collocation |
|---|---|
| do a mistake | make a mistake |
| do progress | make progress |
| big traffic | heavy traffic |
| strong rain | heavy rain |
| open the light | turn on the light |
| fast food (= drive-thru) | quick meal (= eaten quickly) |
How to Learn Vocabulary Effectively
- Learn in context — Don't memorize word lists. Learn words from articles, podcasts, and real conversations.
- Learn collocations, not single words — "Heavy rain" is more useful than just "heavy".
- Use new words immediately — If you learn "detrimental", use it in a practice session the same day.
- Focus on 5 words per day — Quality over quantity. 5 words used correctly > 50 words forgotten.
- Review weekly — Use a simple notebook. Write the word, a sample sentence, and review every Sunday.
